Ek Tara is special place of learning, hope and opportunity. When you enter the school for the first time, you are met with a warm welcome and immediately caught up in the life of this school. The children’s enthusiasm and their desire to learn reinforce the school values that underpin the success of the teaching programmes. It a school community that works hard at living and delivering their values. In my four weeks at Ek Tara, I helped with the Adult Education Programme and some small group work with children who needed help to develop their confidence in speaking English. If you are volunteering in India or Kolkata for the first time, I highly recommend Ek Tara. It not only enables you to make a contribution to the school day, but provides insights into an amazing but complex city too.

Ek Tara truly is an amazing place. I have such fond memories of getting to know the team who were so kind and accommodating. I was especially blown over by the little stars and overwhelmed by their eagerness to shine and learn. For a little peace and quiet I used to escape to their upstairs outreach programme and make some cards from recycled material etc and have an opportunity to be creative. These various programmes give women from vulnerable background so much confidence and self belief. The set up is so impressive that it wouldn’t be possible without the help of the talented staff and volunteers.
I am thrilled that Ek Tara is growing and now has space for the kids to enjoy outdoor activities. I would love to visit again soon to join in this fun loving and thoroughly inspiring environment.
